Apple Removed Their Activation Lock Checker

In 2017, Apple removed the official Activation Lock status page (iCloud.com/activationlock). This page allowed anyone to enter a serial number or IMEI and check whether Activation Lock was enabled.

Apple's reasoning was that the tool could be exploited to identify unlocked devices for targeting. Unfortunately, this left buyers with no official way to verify iCloud status before purchasing.

How to Check in 2026

While Apple no longer provides an official checker, several reliable methods still work:

Method 1: IMEI-Based Online Check

• "Just factory reset it" — A factory reset does NOT remove Activation Lock. The seller knows this.
• "My Apple ID is locked, I'll remove it later" — They won't. They probably can't. Walk away.
• "I have a receipt, so Apple will remove it" — Apple rarely does this, and it can take weeks if they do.
• "I can remove iCloud for a fee" — 99% of these services are scams.
